how to repair xbox error code 13

An error code 13 occurs on an original Xbox gaming console when the Xbox dashboard fails to launch. This usually happens when an Xbox has been modified or has had third-party software installed. The original dashboard becomes incompatible with new dashboard updates that install when connected to Xbox Live. Luckily, you won't need to send your Xbox gaming console into Microsoft for service because error code 13 can be repaired from home with the help of newer Xbox video games.

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Xbox game released after mid-2004
    • 1
Unhook your Ethernet cable from your Xbox. You won't want Internet access for these steps.
    • 2
Find a newer Xbox video game. Games made after autumn of 2004 all have the dashboard update. This includes games such as "Halo 2" and "NCAA Football 2005."
    • 3
Insert the game into your Xbox. Make sure the disc has its writing facing up and shut the disc drive to let the game load.
    • 4
Let the game install the dashboard update automatically. This will occur with most new games, although some need to be installed manually.
    • 5
Install the Microsoft Dashboard manually when it doesn't work automatically. In the main menu, choose "Xbox Live". From here, the game will update your dashboard and clear the error code 13.
    • 6
Plug your Ethernet cable back into your Xbox.

Tips & Warnings

  • If this method does not work, try another recent video game for dashboard installation. After that, you may need to contact Xbox technical support.

how to repair error code 5 on an xbox

The Xbox game console has a built-in hard drive that can quickly become filled. However, replacing the hard drive with a larger model will cause an "Error code 5" to appear on the Xbox's screen, as the replacement drive is not "locked" into the game console's operating system as the original drive was. Fortunately, you can repair the replacement hard drive so it doesn't cause an Error code 5 by modifying (or "modding") the Xbox with a computer chip from a game console modding supply house. While this will void the Microsoft warranty, the addition of the modding computer chip will eliminate the Error code 5.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tampering with the Xbox will void the Microsoft warranty.

how to repair xbox error 7

If your Xbox says that it has encountered Error Code 7, you can fix the problem yourself rather than returning the console to Microsoft. The solution is relatively easy compared to other error codes, but it will require some time and basic knowledge of computer hardware. However, with a few tweaks to your system, you'll be back to gaming soon.

Difficulty:
Moderately Challenging

Instructions

Things You'll Need

  • Small phillips head screwdriver
  • Extra IDE cable (optional)
    • 1
Open your XBox. If you have never done this before, it can be challenging. Follow the link below to see how to do it.
    • 2
Check that the IDE cable is correctly connected to the motherboard, the hard drive, and to the DVD  drive. Usually, Error Code 7 simply means that the cable has come loose.
    • 3
Re-seat the cable by disconnecting and then reconnecting them. Press each connected cable in as hard as you can. The IDE cables Microsoft uses has a tendency to loosen themselves, and the connection can be broken even if they cables seem to be attached.
    • 4
Test your XBox. If you still get the error code, attach a new IDE cable to each connection. You can do this one at a time to be sure that you have located the correct broken connection.
    • 5
Test the system again. If it still does not work, turn the hard drive over. Locate the jumpers on its back and set them to either "master" or "cable select."
    • 6
Test your XBox one more time. If you still get the error, consider consulting a game repair service.

Tips & Warnings

  • Opening your XBox can invalidate the warranty, so only follow these procedures if your warranty has expired.

According to Microsoft, when your XBox 360 system has flashing red lights around the power indicator, the pattern of the lights indicates a specific problem. The lights are green when the system is functioning correctly. This is commonly referred to as the "Red Ring of Death" or "RRoD" by the Gaming community. The problem may be a simple fix or may require you to send your system in for repair.
  1. One Light

    • One flashing red light is displayed on your XBox 360 when a hardware failure occurs on your system. If you turn on your TV, you may see a note about a system error and directions to contact Microsoft customer support. Xbox Support suggests that you disconnect all cables from your system and plug them in again if you receive this error message. Do the same with your hard drive or any memory cards. If the problem persists, then contact XBox customer support.

    Two Lights

    • Support.Xbox.com, the Microsoft XBox official support site, notes that two flashing red lights indicate that your XBox 360 is overheating. The easiest solution is to turn the system off and let it cool down. Making sure the unit is in a well-ventilated area free of clutter where it can "breath" will help the system stay cool. Third-Party companies also sell exterior fans for the XBox 360, as it has a reputation for overheating somewhat regularly.

    Three Lights

    • Three flashing red lights indicate a hardware problem with the power supply or console or both. Turn off your console and unplug the power cord completely then plug it back in. If the problem persists, try using a different wall socket. If the power supply is overheating, the brick light will turn red and should be disconnected long enough to fully cool. If the problem persists, you may need to replace your power supply.

    Four Lights

    • Four flashing red lights means that your XBox 360 console doesn't detect any audio or video input. XBox Support claims this will only occur on consoles that do not have both AV and HDMI ports. This problem simply requires you to unplug all of the audio and video cables and plug them back in (the color-coded cables that connect your system to your television). If this does not work, you may need to use a different set of AV cables.

    E74

    • You must send your XBox 360 in for repair if you encounter the E74 error. This problem is indicated with one flashing red light accompanied by a message on the TV screen ending with the error code E74. According to Support.XBox.com, you can request a repair online (see resources). Microsoft covers the cost of E74 repairs within three years of your console's manufacturing date

how to troubleshoot the xbox 360 red rings

The Microsoft Xbox 360 features a ring of light around the power button on the front of the console. This light will flash green to indicate various functions, such as controller position and internal processing. Red lights indicate problems with the console's operation, with different patterns representing different issues. Some problems can be fixed with these troubleshooting steps.
Difficulty:EasyInstructions
1
Check the audio-video cable if all four quadrants of the Xbox 360 flash red. This indicates that the cable is unplugged or faulty.
2
Cool down the console if the two left lights flash red, as this means the console is overheated. Put it in a well-ventilated area away from other electronic devices or heat sources. After several minutes, plug it back in and see if the flashing lights stop. If so, the system can be used safely.
3
Three red lights indicate hardware failure, and you will need to have your Xbox 360 console serviced or replaced. Contact Xbox customer support at 800-469-9269 or xbox.com/support if you encounter this or any other ring patterns.
4
Four flashing green lights indicate that either no controller has been assigned to one of the quadrants, or that all four quadrants are full (if you try to add a fifth controller

Tips & Warnings

  • If your Xbox 360 is consistently overheating, consider buying a cooling device. It attaches to the back of your console and contains small fans that push hot air out of the system. Shop around and you'll be able to find one for under $30.
